studio FAQs

HOW DO WE GET STARTED WITH VOICE LESSONS?

Our first meeting will be a chance for us both to get acquainted. I’m excited to hear you and to find out what your goals are. Singing is natural and should be fun. I will also demonstrate some basics about breathing, vocalization, and different vocal styles. What are your goals, your hopes, your aspirations?! I look forward to meeting you.

WHAT ARE YOUR RATES?

An hour runs for $50, 45 minutes for $40, or 30 minutes for $30. You can pay by cash or check. Monthly installments are preferred for ease in bookkeeping for us both.

WHAT IF I CAN'T READ MUSIC?

While I provide you with sheet music for songs and vocalises you will be working on, every voice lesson is recorded onto a CD that you take home to make practicing easier. You will have the accompaniment to sing along with, and recording of my singing the melody.

WILL I SOUND LIKE AN OPERA SINGER?

Only if you want to! A solid vocal technique can be used to keep your vocal instrument healthy no matter what style you want to sing. It even helps your speaking voice avoid hoarseness.

DO YOU ALSO TEACH PIANO?

Yes! And I bring the same passion and patience to my piano students that my voice students receive.

HOW DOES SKYPE WORK?

After the initial lesson in which we assess what music to work on, I send you vocalises and sheet music along with a recording so you can practice, and also so you can play the accompaniment to sing to during our lessons. We can hear each other quite well as long as the connection is reliable.

You will want to be able to stand and still see the computer screen and any sheet music you’re working from without slouching or leaning. A music stand, a tall bookcase or filing cabinet will work. A mirror is helpful too so you can see what your face is doing to support the vocal work.

Besides Skype, we can use FaceTime or, even better, Zoom – you can record the lesson and practice during the week from Zoom!

WHAT IS YOUR CANCELLATION / RESCHEDULING POLICY?

If you need to reschedule or cancel, please give me notice at least by 7 PM the night before your lesson. I have to charge for the lesson otherwise. If you are sick or there is an emergency, that rule does not apply, but I do need to receive a call or text message from you as early as possible. If you do not show up without any notice given, I still have to charge you.
